For me, the whole "buy local" thing is/was an afterthought. This recent recession has drastically changed my thinking. We all know that for every $1 spent locally, $.68 stays local. Sounds wonderful and all that.
Recently, a new study came out. (Surprise, surprise) Basically sayin' that if every local business hired just 1 extra person, unemployment would be near extinction. My first thought: does this same theory apply to large corporations? Well...
Let's put two and two together....
For every $1, $.68 stays local (what is bought local, stays local).
If a local company hires an employee, that new employee is going to need lunch. Hopefully that employee will go down to the local deli. Not to mention the employee needs entertainment (movie theaters, out to eat etc).
I am very happy to do my buy local, stay local part.
Waste Management is no longer my garbage company. Green Valley, hq-ed in Comstock Park (aka the next town over) is my new disposal co. Not only am I benefiting (friendlier service) but my community is benefiting as well. Basically...it's a win-win.
