Honestly, the decision to feed my cats a grain free diet wasn't easy.
Was/is grain free food worth the money? Is it mostly hype?
Ms Kitty was/is so small, I worried about her. She was as light as a feather.
Fatty was, well, fat. I worried about him too.
I couldn't find any legit research on cat food, but I found a lot on grain free vs normal dog food. Mostly from This website.
"Normal" dog food is made up corn and cheap fillers (starches). Every pet food needs a binder to hold everything together aka starches. Normal dog food is a lot like eating corn chips. Grain free food has starches too, but they are derived from potatoes and things like that.
I read somewhere that cats (not on that dog food site) are more sensitive to food allergens...like corn meal.
I decided to take the "risk" and get Before Grain . It's moderately priced...cheaper than the other well known brands (Blue Buffalo etc)
After a few weeks...
- It's hard to describe Fatty. He isn't really fat, he has a firm stomach now. It's like the fat turned into rocks. Ms Kitty gained weight--not the bad kind either. She must have been sensitive/allergic to something in her old food.
- Both cats have extremely soft coats. Fatty always was/is a little panther--soft black fur with dandruff. His dandruff is gone and looks more fabulous. Ms Kitty's coat was rough and unattractive. She looks and feels like good now.
- It's hard to tell if my cats are MORE active. Cats are cats. They nap when they want too, play when they too. Barf on your carpet when they want too. It's hard to monitor active vs non active because cats are unpredictable.
- Cat eat less; thus, cats poop less. Means less cat litter. I think the cats eat less because instead of every 4 kibbles of food to 1 unit of energy, it's now 1 kibble to 1 unit of energy. It's like eating marshmallows (all sugar-experience rush and then crash) vs a solid meal.
I think Ms Kitty has benefited the most from this food. Ms Kitty seems better...healthier, more active (from what I can tell), happier, cuter etc. Fatty has a ways to go before he's truly fit/not fat.
I think grain free food is here to stay. It's a little expensive, but with the whole eating less thing-it might/probably equals out.
EDIT: My cats have been acting more umm, cat-ty lately. New food? I think so.
