Here's where your thermometer comes in handy:
According to the recipe I'm using, the culture has to sit out at room temp. until it reaches 75 degrees. This step can take any where from 18 hours to 60 hours. We're almost there, but not exactly. I'll give it another day before moving onto the next step.
I mentioned previously that we keep our house pretty cold. Therefore, I actually moved the jar into the "fireplace room"--where we always have a fire going during these cold days. And there's I'm impatient and SO waiting 60 hours!
During this lengthy butter making process, I really want to bake.
We have no butter. In our. House. A first! I COULD buy some butter, but...
I'm almost ashamed that I bought these two items. Actually--I am ashamed of myself! Since I wanted to bake and we have no butter...yet...I used what we DO have: Crisco vegetable shortening. (double shame!)
I thought a Betty Crocker mix is the perfect way to try out a new substitution--if the thing doesn't turn out right, there's no wasted efforts and ingredients.
The bars turned out ok, but would be better if they were from scratch with real homemade butter :)
But I mean, everyone likes a little processed stuff once a in a great while, right?
