As a self-claimed, "modern-feminist," 95% of the time I agree on what most of the organization stands and fights for.
By the way, if you're reading this and shaking your head, "you're not a feminist!" Well, I've been married for four years, 24 years of age-turning 25-in November and I have two cats and (hopefully) a dog on the way. None of my kids have two legs. I'm not really sure when we're going to have human kids, I'm not really counting on it. When it happens, it will happen. Right?! Right. You have no idea how many girls CAN'T say that...their lives practically revolve around babies and finding that "perfect man." Also, I can carry a bale of straw from point A to B with little effort. So go poop yourself! :)
Moving onward.
In this newsletter, it stated that Disney Store has ( or had, thanks to a Change.org petition) t-shirts that have images of male superheroes from The Avengers, with captions like, "I need a hero" and "I only kiss heroes." Really?!
As a female, I need a male? To rescue me from carrying around bales of straw? From hand washing and waxing my car?* (Which I've done numerous times MYSELF).
It's really handy being a strong, confident female. [Mmm, let's forget about the part where it took me a good year and a half to get the courage to learn how to push-mow our little city lot. As a shy, little married 21-year old, mowing a city lot is scary stuff!] I understand that whole bit about the differences between a man and woman (and not just talking body parts either).
Further down the email states:
"This weekend, take the time to thank one person in your life who exudes this sort of true heroism. Whether it is how they've sprung to action in a moment of crisis or something they display daily through the kindness of their interactions with you, let them and others know that they inspire you to be brave."
Oh, that's easy. My dad.
And my mom. And my big sister. And my doggy brother. And my foster doggy brother. And my doggy sister. Oh, shit. Can I say my whole (immediate) family inspires me to be strong and hero like?
My dad could easily be the type of father who sets rules, mows the lawn and spreads the mulch. However, I think my mom did most of that stuff (minus the rule part, because we never had rules growing up). Instead my dad was the wind beneath my mother's wings.
My mom could easily be the type to volunteer on every single church and school committee. She let me be me and knew that I was "safe" from whatever Satanist propaganda the institutions were possibly teaching me (#badjoke #Iknow).
My sister is my sister. She taught me extreme amounts of confidence and was (and still is) my big sister when she needed to be my big sister. I still remember visiting her in college.
*I used to wait until I had to impress someone before wash n waxing my car. Even today I try to impress my bro-in-law's friends. So far, no good. But I'm married, so...I guess I can stop trying to impress the boys?
